Football Remembered One Iconic Photograph at a Time

Football History Through the Camera

Soccer Illustrated will celebrate football through the photographs that have become part of the history of the game. From the 1950s to the present day, we will showcase only truly iconic images — photographs that captured far more than a match or a famous player. These are pictures that defined a moment, an era or a personality: images such as the unforgettable photograph of Tom Finney powering through the water at Stamford Bridge in 1956 — forever known as “The Splash”.

This will not be simply another gallery of football photographs. Every image must have a story and a reason for being here. World Cups, Wembley, packed terraces, great players, extraordinary celebrations, heartbreak, humour and those split-second moments when a photographer happened to press the shutter at exactly the right time. Alongside each photograph we hope to tell the story behind it — who, where, when, why it mattered and, whenever possible, the photographer who created it. Together they will form a visual history of more than 70 years of the beautiful game: football remembered one iconic photograph at a time.

The photographs that didn't just record football history — they became part of it.
